  • The Potomac Massage Training Institute (PMTI) a national leader in massage therapy education, transforms the health and well-being of the Washington DC metropolitan community through professional development, outreach, local partnerships and research.

    If you value... History

    • PMTI is the only massage school in the Washington, DC metropolitan area that has a continuous 34-year history of providing professional training for massage therapists and serving the community.
    • Over the years, many of our graduates and staff members have gone on to serve as activists and advocates throughout the massage industry, and have made history through their contributions to the massage field. PMTI alums have served in leadership posts with organizations such as:
      • the American Massage Therapy Association
      • the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork
      • the DC Board of Licensing
      • the Virginia Board of Nursing oversight of massage therapy
      • and the Massage Therapy Advisory Committee of the State of Maryland.

    If you value… Integrity

PMTI’s highest priority has always been the quality of education that our students receive.  We are the only nonprofit massage school on the East Coast, and we hold ourselves to the highest standards of our profession:

    • In addition to the laws and licensing of the District of Columbia, we hold ourselves accountable to both the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation and the AMTA Council of Schools.
    • Potomac Massage Training Institute is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education Approved Provider.
    • We abide by the AMTA Code of Ethics, as well as our own internal code.
    • Our teachers must hold all necessary certifications for practicing massage, and participate in regular teacher training.

Whether you are looking for a new career, interested in continuing your education to expand your knowledge as a massage therapist, or drawn to take an introductory class on massage and bodywork for yourself, family and friends - come join our circle.  During our 35 years of service in Washington, D.C., northern Virginia, and Maryland, we have developed a strong legacy of training excellent massage therapists who practice their art and skill with expertise, integrity and heart...

  • Directions: PMTI is located at 5028 Wisconsin Avenue NW, the Lower Level. We are on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue, between Fessenden and Garrison Streets in NW DC. We are right in the middle of the block. PMTI is ½ block south of Rodman’s Drug and Grocery store and ½ block north of Rome Pizza and Sub, which is right on the corner of Fessenden and Wisconsin.
Please call (202) 686-7046 or 510-295-7141 if you are lost (use this number during class days only).

    How to access our suite:
PMTI is located in a secure building. If the entrance doors are locked (after hours and weekends), use the building keypad at the entrance door to dial PMTI for access.

    Metro:
Take the Red Line Metro to the Friendship Heights station. From the platform, take the Jenifer Street exit. At street level, you will be walking south (or to your right) on Wisconsin Avenue. PMTI is 2 ½ blocks away on the same side of the street at 5028 Wisconsin Avenue.

    Car:
PMTI is approximately 5.5 miles from I-495 (Exit 39, River Road/Route I-90). Once you exit to River Road stay on it for 4.5 miles until you reach Western Avenue. You will be turning left onto Western (there is a left turn signal). Stay in the right lane. You will be driving 0.4 miles to Wisconsin Avenue (the 4th light). Turn right at Wisconsin Avenue. You are in the midst of the Mazza Galleria shopping center. Stay on Wisconsin Avenue for 3 1/2 blocks. We are on the right hand side, in the middle of the block between Garrison and Fessenden Streets.

  • Student Parking:
Metered parking is available between 9:30am and 3pm on Wisconsin Avenue in front of our building; these meters are free on Sundays. Two-hour metered parking is also available at all times around our building throughout the neighborhood and is also free on the weekends. There is a public parking lot directly behind Rodman’s Drugstore at 5100 Wisconsin Ave; the entrance is on Garrison Street. This is a Landmark Parking Lot and rates are $2.00/hr with a maximum of $8.00/day (parking is often free on weekends.) Parking is NOT available in the parking lot behind our building. Because of the limited amount of space available, parking is for tenants only who must pay in advance for parking privileges.
